- Final Verdict
1. Fully Enclosed Printer.
This 3D printer is fully enclosed in a plastic alloy frame. There’s an acrylic door at the front plus the top is also removable. There are also opening hatches on either side of the printer to allow for better airflow. This is important when using different types of filament. These hatches will also allow you to use larger spools of filament as you can feed the filament through the open hatches.
Being fully enclosed means that the printer is much safer to use especially if you have small children or pets in the house as all the heated and moving parts reside within the frame of the printer. This also helps to keep out dust and other foreign objects so your printer works much more efficiently.
If you’re going to use the Flashforge filament spools, these sit inside the printer as there is a filament spool on either side. This is extremely convenient if you have limited desktop space for your 3D printer.
2. Excellent Temperature Control.
Because the printer is completely enclosed, it provides a controlled environment for printing all types of filament. There are two cooling fans situated at the back of the printer as well as a cooling fan on the left side of the extruders.
Inside the printer there’s a temperature gauge which monitors the temperature of the air around the extruders. This fan will effectively cool both extruders as the filament comes out.
3. Intuitive Touch Screen.
On the front of the printer there’s a 3.5 inch touch screen which allows you to control the printer’s operation. This allows you to monitor the printing process and control various functions.
The ‘print’ selection allows you to choose whether to print from the 4GB internal memory, from the SD card or via the USB cable connected to your computer. This printer also has WiFi connectivity so you can control it remotely.
There’s also a ‘preheat’ function on the touch screen which allows you to control the temperature of each extruder as well as the build plate.
The ‘tools’ menu allows you to load and unload the filament. There’s also a leveling function which guides you through the leveling of the build plate. This is done manually by simply turning three spring-loaded screws under the plate. The process is fairly simple with the step-by-step guided instructions.
4. Dual Extruders.
The dual extruders on the Flashforge Dreamer will work simultaneously while creating your print job. You can easily use two different colors to build two colored objects. On the other hand, if you plan to print models which need support structures you can print the support in a different color to the print object. This makes it much easier to remove the supports once the object is finished printing.
Each extruder is 1.75mm with a 0.4mm nozzle. They are direct drive with a release spring which means they have better filament grip.
5. Easy To Use Integrated Software.
This 3D printer comes with its own slicing software aptly named FlashPrint. This is very similar to the MakerBot software and generates the GCode necessary to control the printer. It is extremely simple to use even for 3D printing novices.
All you need to do is import the STL file that you want to print. The software then gives you various slicing options as well as temperature options for the extruders and the build plate. You can manually adjust any of these settings however the default settings work just fine as they are.
The FlashPrint software also allows for remote control of your printer when you have it connected to your WiFi. This means you can have your printer in your workshop or garage if you wish and still see exactly what it’s doing when sitting at your computer. With this software you can monitor the entire build process as well as stop or start the print job if needed.
6. Heated Build Plate
The Flashforge Dreamer comes with a heated build plate so you can use many different types of filament. It works well with PLA, ABS, Nylon and even Ninja Flex. This will allow you to create a variety of different print jobs depending on your needs.
The maximum build volume of the build plate is 9.1 inches x 5.9 inches x 5.5 inches.
So What’s In The Box?
The Flashforge Dreamer 3D printer is a complete plug and play printer. It comes totally pre-assembled and ready to use. Here’s what you’ll get:
- The Flashforge Dreamer 3D printer.
- 2 spools of filament – one in PLA and one in ABS.
- A USB cable to connect to your computer.
- Some tool kits for use with the printer.
- A power cord to plug into your power socket.
- A 2GB SD card which fits into the SD slot on the right hand side of the printer.
Setting up this printer is an absolute breeze. All you need to do is take it out of the box and attach the extruders with 2 screws. Next turn the machine on and load the filament using the touch screen. Also using the touch screen, you’ll then need to level the build plate. Once you’ve downloaded that FlashPrint software onto your computer and sliced your first print job, you’re ready to start printing.
Can This 3D Printer Handle Flexible Filament?
The Flashforge Dreamer works extremely well with flexible filament such as Ninja-flex due to its direct drive feed mechanism. You may need to make some adjustments to the print settings but they should be similar to what you use for printing PLA. The only exception would be the speed. A setting of 20-40 mm per second seems to work great for flexible filament on this machine.
What Operating Systems Is The FlashPrint Software Compatible With?
FlashPrint works with both Windows and Mac OS operating systems. It does not work on Linux however.
Can You Use Any Filament Spool Size In This Printer?
The Flashforge Dreamer can accommodate 0.7kg spools inside the printer enclosure only. You can however use the more economical 1kg spools of filament by feeding the filament in through the hatches on the sides of the printer. You can find spool holders that you can print yourself on Thingiverse to hold these larger spools.
Alternatively you can wind your filament onto an empty 0.7kg spool to use inside the printer.
What Type Of Warranty And Support To You Get With This Printer?
The Flashforge Dreamer comes with a standard 90 day warranty and full lifetime support. If you wish you, you also have the option of purchasing either a 6 month or 12 month extended warranty.
Customer support is excellent for this printer. You’ll always get a quick response to any problem you may encounter. Flashforge also offer reduced pricing on parts to registered customers even after the warranty has expired.
How Noisy Is This Printer?
The Flashforge Dreamer is about as loud as a typical laser printer. There’s not much noise coming from the motors themselves. It’s mainly the fans which come on when needed which will make a little noise.
How Do You Access The FlashPrint Software?
The Flashprint slicing software is available to download for both Windows and Mac OS and is easy to install. There is also a comprehensive user manual in PDF format which you can download.
Are There Any Online Support Groups Or Forums For This Printer?
There is quite a large Flashforge online community with forums and discussion groups that you can join to get hints and tips on using this 3D printer.
For example there is a large Flashforge google group which has a lot of activity and lots of helpful advice on using the Flashforge 3D printers. There are also a lot of users and a couple of groups on Thingiverse specifically geared toward the Flashforge Dreamer.
If you’re looking for easy print job designs which you can print on the Dreamer, you’ll find plenty on Thingiverse as well.
Can You Use The Dual Extruders At The Same Time To Speed Up The Printing Process?
It is not possible to speed up the printing process by using both extruders at the same time as each extruder takes it in turn to print on the object. The two nozzles never extrude filament at the same time. Each time the printer needs to change nozzle the extruder must align itself correctly to its previous position before it can continue printing.
Using the dual extruder is best when you intend to use two different colors of filament either because you want a multi colored print object or you need to print support structures. If you are just printing in one color, simply just select to use one extruder when setting up your print job in the FlashPrint software.
