So What Is A Delta 3D Printer?
A Delta printer is different to other 3D printers in its method of moving. A lot of other 3D printers use the Cartesian system which basically consists of printing in straight lines with abrupt changes of direction. These printers use a system of three rails on which there are sliding joints or screws. These help to position the print nozzle as per your 3D print file.
The Delta printer on the other hand, has three runners which run on long vertical rails. These three runners all have an arm which is connected to the print nozzle. These arms can move up and down independently from the print nozzle thereby ensuring that the nozzle is precisely where it should be during the print. This also means that prints are produced much faster compared to other 3D printers.
For a more simple explanation, Cartesian printers move back and forth and up and down whereas a Delta printer can move in a circular motion.
Generally, Delta printers are much taller than other 3D printers which means you can print much taller object with this type of printer. So if you want to print tall vases or a model of the Eiffel tower, a Delta printer is ideal.
The other most common difference is that a Delta printer uses a fixed build platform while other 3D printers have movable build plates. The fixed build platform results in much better precision printing as long as your print is properly adhered to the plate to begin with.
Key Features Of The Anycubic Delta 3D Printer:
European standard 2020 aluminum frame construction to ensure stable prints and durability.
All metal printing hot end (effector) with 2 cooling fans for more precise printing and durability. The filament feeds very smoothly through the print head due to the anti-clog and anti-leakage design.
TriGorilla Motherboard which is easy to install and operate. This motherboard contains ports for the heated build plate and the controlled cooling fans. It also offers extension port for SERVOS, UART and IIC for functions such as auto-leveling, color screen, WIFI and filament detection. Experienced 3D printing enthusiasts will find these functions extremely useful.
The TriGorilla boards also uses DC-DC voltage reduction to widen the input voltage and substantially reduce the heat generation. It also has short circuit protection and opposite connection protection. It is compatible with Marlin firmware which is already installed on the board.
Durable metal extruder equipped with a high torque stepper motor. This ensures a stable rotation speed and uniform extrusion.
3 month replacement warranty and lifetime technical support.
Carbon fiber rods with high quality rod ends which are lightweight to allow for easy movement.
Glass PCB heat bed measuring 200mm (9 inches) diameter suitable for printing with PLA & ABS filament.
Compatible with PLA, ABS, nylon ad wood filaments 1.75mm diameter.
LED display which is easy to read and use.
Injection molded parts for strength and durability. Their uniform shape and size makes assembly easy and minimizes printing error.
What’s In The Box?
Your package will come extremely well packed with all the parts in individual compartments in a foam box.
In the box you’ll find:
- All the parts necessary to assemble your printer.
- All the tools required for assembly.
- Comprehensive manual with parts list and assembly instructions complete with photos plus instructions on how to set up the firmware.
- A separate instruction sheet with links to YouTube videos showing the assembly procedures.
- A sample roll of filament to get you started on your first print job.
- A 200mm MK2Y round heat bed.
- A 12V 20A regulated power supply.
- An SD card plus card reader. The SD card contains the Marlin firmware, Printrun, Arduino IDE, Cura and some test models to print.
- A 1-spool filament rack.
What Is The Difference Between The Pulley Version And The Linear Version?
The main difference between the pulley and linear version of a Delta printer is the way that the effector moves up and down the frame. The linear version uses bearings to move on specific linear guides on the frame which are attached to push arms and connected to the effector. The pulley version uses a set of pulleys to move on the frame and these are in turn connected to push arms which are attached to the effector.
Generally speaking the linear version requires less maintenance due to fewer moving parts but is more expensive.
The pulley version, on the other hand, may require some tightening of screws periodically but is more lightweight and cheaper plus the parts are easier to replace if necessary.
There is no substantial quality difference between prints using either system.
Is This Kit Easy To Assemble?
The Anycubic Delta printer kit comes with a full instruction manual with photographs for easy assembly. There are also instructions included with links to YouTube videos detailing the assembly procedures.
The motherboard is fully labelled so you can easily tell which connector goes where. The printer is fairly easy to assemble if you take your time and follow the instructions precisely.
The black cable wrap which is included makes it easy to keep your cables neat and tidy.
What Software and Firmware Do You Need To Produce Prints?
The Anycubic Delta 3D printer comes complete with Marlin firmware already installed on the motherboard. Marlin basically takes the G-Code file that you’ve produced and controls the printer including the heaters, steppers and LCD display. But before any of this can happen you need to first create the G-Code file by following these steps:
Either create your own 3D design with software like Sketchup or another CAD program or find an already created file on websites like Thingiverse or YouMagine. There are lots of things you can print including accessories for your 3D printer. The file that you’ll create or download will be in STL format.
Next you’ll need to slice this file to produce the many layers that a 3D printer will print to create the final product. You can use software like Cura which is very popular or Repetier Host. This software will convert the STL file into the necessary G-Code format that your printer’s firmware will understand.
You can access all of the Marlin firmware functions using either the LCD control panel or via USB cable using host software on your PC or MC such as Repetier Host or Cura. There is even a function to help with auto-leveling of the print bed.
Is The Printer Easy To Calibrate And Level?
There are some excellent instructional videos on the Anycubic 3D channel which guide you through the calibration and leveling process step-by-step.
All you need to do is connect the printer to your computer via the USB cable and open the host software that you’re using. The instructional videos use Pronterface. Then just follow along with the instructions. There are written steps on the videos as well which make it quite easy to follow.
There is also a video which walks you through installing Cura 15.04 and how to set up your first print job including printer settings It’s all step-by-step and seems very easy to follow. You’ll even see a live demonstration of the printer actually working.
Other videos include how to upload the firmware and install the drivers if your computer won’t do this automatically.
You can also get a auto calibration device here which is specifically designed for delta 3d printers.
3 month full replacement warranty. If anything breaks or does not work they will replace it within the time frame of the warranty.
